Coastal fort Verudella is one of a hundred elements in the “Fortress Pula” defensive system. Settled on an altitude of 31 metres above sea level, it was built and equipped from 1881. until 1886., and made a unique defensive compound with the nearby San Giovanni battery.
Since 2002., fort Verudela has housed the attractive “Aquarium Pula” on a 2000 m2 area. The aquarium, opened all year, offers an interesting, stimulating and educational approach to marine plant and animal life of the Adriatic Sea, tropical marine and freshwater world, as well as freshwater fish from European rivers and lakes. The aquarium is also a home to the only Marine turtle rescue centre on the eastern Adriatic coast. Along with its touristic role, Aquarium Pula conducts a comprehensive oceanological educational programme “Blue school” that takes place in the lab, on the coast and on the boat.
